FROM 1623 to 1675 there were 10 massacres of LENAPE in NEW ENGLAND. Six of those massacres occurred in New York. By 1643 the educated English men of New England knew they were supposed to omit the words “Catholics,” “Lenape” and “Norse” in written messages.
Roger Williams wrote the “KEY to the AMERICAN INDIAN LANGUAGE without using those words. But he did cleverly list mostly Norse words with their meanings.
He also wrote about a conversation with the Dutch Governor of New York, wherein they agreed the Americans spoke the same language as the people of Iceland (Norse.).
Suppression by omission did make the LENAPE seem to vanish. They do not live on any federally recognized reservations.
But they did NOT vanish.
The only three state recognized tribes in New Jersey are Lenape.
On November 27, 2009 the Protestant Church of New York apologized for Massacring the Lenape in New York. The New York Lenape, who were assisted by a Lenape spokesman from Oklahoma, accepted the apology.
The Lenape principles for life live on as the guidelines of the Order of the Arrow in the Boy Scouts. Each new applicant to the Order of the Arrow learns Lenape Words.
Google “Lenape.” You will observe that there is an LENAPE regional high school system, which also formed schools for Shawnee, Cherokee, Seneca, and Sequoia students. The Seneca were, four centuries ago, enemies of the Lenape.
Observe that there is a LENAPE porcelain business, a TV producer, a TECH school, a trail, a pizza parlor and many more Lenape things.
Suppression by omission works best in school circulums.
Even if most of the school circulars omit their history,
the Lenape are still HERE. NOW you are teaching their HISTORY.
